Jacob Aguer Ajang’s academic career started right after he landed on American soil in June 2001. He knew his academic dreams would be fulfilled. Below is the list of his academic expertise:
- He received a Bachelor of Science in General Education from Grace University in December 2006 in Omaha Nebraska.
- After three years of academic rest, he continued and graduated with a Master of Arts in Human Services from Bellevue University, Bellevue, Nebraska in March 2011.
- Shortly after he graduated with his master degree in July 2011. He resumed his studies and achieved his highest academic degree, the Doctorate of Philosophy in Higher Educational Leadership from Trident University International, Cypress, California in July 2016 from.
- He also received other certifications including: Diploma in Food Safety, Alison Academic, Galway, Ireland in February 2017.
- Expected to receive a Graduate Certificate in Food Safety and Defense at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska in September 2018.
Dr. Ajang is a South Sudanese by nationality and a citizen of the United States. He is one of the South Sudanese 3,500 Lost Boys who have been resettled as a refugee since 2000. He has lived in Omaha, Nebraska for 15 years of his residency in the United States. Jacob was born to parents with no educational background. Both his parents were farmers and raised cattle. He is the first person from his family to receive this level of education.
Dr. Ajang has been married to his beautiful wife, Elizabeth Abuk Ajang for over 10 years plus. They have five daughters and son. The oldest to youngest include: Athok, Ayak, Alek, Nyakiir, Apajok and son Ajang Jacob Aguer.
Dr. Ajang doctoral dissertation was conducted under the direction of Dr. Michael Wesolek, Dr. Wenling Li and Dr. Rhonda Parmley. Title of My Study: The Impacts of Quality Teaching on Student Satisfaction in Higher Education in South Sudan (with the data being collected at University of Juba), one of five public universities in the country. In my research, quantitative data were collected by using survey instruments: What Is Happening in This Class (WIHIC); Student Satisfaction Inventory (SII) and ask Qualitative open ended questions to help gain a clear understanding and summarize the data survey questionnaires. The objective of the study was to provide specific guidance to help teachers improve effective teaching strategies by engaging students in active learning, creating effective curriculum which supports an increased learning experience, and developing an effective environment in which students have connections in the classroom.
Dr. Ajang’s research skills and background include taking research courses during his master’s program in statistics research methods, analytical organizational financial research, organizational performance and structure, conflict resolution management, conflict mediation and much more. He has been continuously going to school since he arrived in the United States in 2001. His 14 years of educational background and skills will prepare him to identify as well as propose an appropriate experimental understanding aimed at increasing student learning. Dr. Ajang believes he is fortunate to be here in the United States a country where there is opportunity to have achievable goals. He is so excited to be part of this educative community. He is privileged to share with you the important needs of quality teaching and student satisfaction in higher education for all the people of the Republic of South Sudan. He appreciates and honors the time everyone has dedicated to participate in the fulfillment of his study. He wants to assure everyone that this study is not politically motivated nor does it dramatize or criticize any institution or organization’s performance in particular.
Since his arrival in the United States, he has returned to South Sudan six times. Dr. Ajang has learned that there are only seven public universities in the whole country and two of the seven are closed because of insufficient funding. The remaining universities are not enough to serve an estimated population of 8.2 million people. Jacob has researched the operations and the backgrounds of the five public institutions of higher education and found they are facing challenges in providing quality teaching. He saw an opportunity to utilize the quality education he has been afforded here in America to increase and sustain that same quality of education in his homeland.
His self-motivation and determination have been his driving characteristics to remaining focused on his academic and career goals. He has a very strong work ethic, willing to continuously learn, and strive to exceed expectations of any given situation. He is looking to feed his inner desire to continue to learn more skills. Dr. Ajang is exceptionally well organized and a resourceful professional working with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a Food Inspector, over ten years’ customer service experience and a solid academic advisor; excellent analytical and problem solving skills; able to handle multiple projects while producing high quality work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Currently, Dr. Ajang is working for the USDA. As a Consumer Safety Inspector, his job is to ensure the nation’s commercial supply of meat is safe, wholesome, and correctly labeled and packaged. He has successfully understood the processes of protecting the public health by ensuring the safety and security of our nation’s food supply. Dr. Ajang has strong organizational skills which have been shown through tracking and developing reports that are submitted to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Services.
Dr. Ajang’s work experience includes working as an Academic Advisor at Metropolitan Community College to advise students concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedules, choice of major and other academic activities and career goals, to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation; worked at the American Red Cross recruiting prospective blood donors from a variety of sources by phoning individuals to make donation appointments and ensure that patients who need emergency blood supply receive blood in an emergency; worked as an On Call Staff Interpreter/Translator at Alegent Health Bergan Mercy Medical Center, Salvation Army, Emanuel Hospital, Nebraska Medicine, Charles Drew, and Hope Medical Outreach Coalition by providing and facilitating an understanding between the Healthcare Providers and South Sudanese patients; and currently, Dr. Ajang has been working for the last 10 years at the Nebraska Medical Center in the Lied Transplant Center, balancing the night audit, manage and record daily accounts receivable deposits of up to $50,000 and conduct extensive research to recover lost checks and organized system to stop payment and replace all checks.

Dr. Ajang voluntary work involvements for the community organizations include working as an internship client specialist at Family Lutheran Services to ensure refugees or new comers who come to the United States as refugees due to political background or asylum receive service assistance during their first six months of arrival; worked as a Chairman for the Board of Directors with the Kongor Development Association (KDA),USA to support and sustain the work of KDA as well as providing governance leadership and strategic fundraising support; worked as an Early Head Start Policy Council (PC) with the Omaha Public Schools Head Start (OPSHS) to develop a partnership with parents and staff in making decisions about program changes and policies; worked as Treasurer with the Nebraska Greater Bor Community by ensuring that effective financial systems and procedures have been established, are being consistently followed and are in line with best practice and legal requirements; and currently, he has been working as a Chairman of the West Community Initiative for 3 years by ensuring that the Board of Directors and Executive Officials are aware to fulfill their governance responsibilities, are accountable for their performances, comply with applicable and organization bylaws and regulations, conduct board business effectively and efficiently.
Dr. Ajang has a vision for his fellow South Sudanese community members to live productive lives, raising healthy children, and taking pride in their community and nation. He will ensure our goals and the instruments used to obtain them are honorable, moral and efficient. This staunch accountability will keep our hearts pure and our actions noble.Even our children must work to take part in our development so that each and every person will appreciate all that is achieved.
His goal for the year is to see the needs for our people are brought to the attention of the worlds’ nations. We are not alone on this big blue ball; there are many others who would take up our cause if only they knew our plight. He believes he will make that voice heard around the world by conducting educational researches. His most fervid desire is to be active in upgrading educational opportunities to the highest standards for a new-born nation dedicated to the truth.
Dr. Ajang is fully aware of the on-going problems facing the people of the South Sudanese community, both here in America and back in South Sudan. His passion as an educator and a parent is a desire to promote an efficient and cost-effective solution to the challenges affecting quality teaching that impact learning opportunities for students focusing on the development of the entire community.
